If you need dependable food storage through hot weather and overnight stops, compressor technology is the serious option. If you only need drinks and packaged food cooler than the cab for a shift, the cheaper thermoelectric route may be enough.
Choose a compressor fridge when…
- You need controlled cooling rather than a temperature drop relative to the cab.
- The unit will run for multi-day trips.
- You can justify the higher purchase price and verify power draw, ventilation clearance and low-voltage protection.
Choose a thermoelectric cooler when…
- The load is mostly drinks, snacks and short-shift items.
- Low upfront cost matters more than precise temperature.
- You can inspect the plug and socket regularly; driver discussions specifically report melted plugs on some 12V coolers.
Do not skip the power check
Before buying, confirm the truck’s outlet rating, the device’s running and startup draw, cable routing, ventilation and whether the outlet stays live with the ignition off. Driver comparisons cover Dometic, Koolatron, ICECO, BougeRV and Alpicool, but no current Canadian price or model test was confirmed. Brand rankings should wait for a real side-by-side test.
