12V outlet safety & inverter sizing

Your 12V outlet is not a wall socket. Here's what it can handle — and what melts it.

Updated October 5, 2026

The 12V outlet looks like an invitation. It is actually a 10–15 amp fuse protecting thin factory wiring. Respect the math and everything works; ignore it and you're buying fuses — or worse.

What a 12V outlet can run

Volts × amps = watts. A 12V outlet on a 15A fuse gives you ~180W theoretical, ~120W comfortable. That covers: phone/laptop chargers, 12V fans, heated blankets (45–60W), small 12V coolers, LED lighting. It does not cover: anything with "1500W" on the label.

When you need an inverter

Microwaves, coffee makers, air fryers, power tools — anything over ~150W needs an inverter wired directly to the batteries with proper gauge cable and a fuse. Size it with 20% headroom over your max simultaneous load. The inverter size calculator does the math.

Why space heaters on inverters are a bad idea

A 1500W space heater pulls ~140A from your 12V system. That's welding-cable territory, and it'll flatten batteries in under an hour. Heat the driver (blanket, seat cover) or burn diesel (bunk heater) — don't try to electric-heat the air. See diesel bunk heaters for the real solution.

Amps are honest. The outlet doesn't care about your plans.

Safety checklist

Never exceed the fuse rating. Never replace a blown fuse with a bigger one — the fuse protects the wire, and the wire will melt before a bigger fuse blows. Keep connections clean and tight. If a plug gets hot, stop using it. Run a CO detector if you burn anything for heat.

Questions, answered

Can I run a microwave from the 12V outlet?

No. Microwaves need 700–1200W — that's an inverter wired to the batteries, not the dash outlet.

What size inverter do I need?

Add up simultaneous watts, add 20% headroom. Use the inverter size calculator.

Why did my fuse blow?

You exceeded the circuit's rating. Don't upsize the fuse — reduce the load or rewire properly.
