Truck driver seat in sleeper cab

Back pain & posture for truck drivers

Your seat is trying to ruin your spine. Fight back with posture, support, and movement.

Updated October 5, 2026

Ten hours a day, five days a week, in a seat designed for the average of everyone. Your back keeps the score. The good news: small, consistent fixes beat heroic interventions.

Lumbar support that works

Cushions and hip alignment

When your hips tilt, your spine compensates all the way up. A cushion that keeps your sit bones level — and a wedge if your seat pan tilts wrong — takes load off the lower back. See the full best seat cushions guide.

Your spine doesn't care about your delivery window.

Memory foam vs gel

Memory foam conforms and distributes pressure — great for long sits, but it traps heat. Gel (or gel-infused foam) sleeps cooler and feels firmer. Hot-natured drivers and summer running favor gel; if you run cold or in winter, standard memory foam is fine.

When cushions fail

Replace a cushion when: it no longer springs back, you've compressed a permanent butt-print into it, the cover's shot and the foam is exposed, or your back pain came back after months of relief. Most quality cushions last 1–2 years of daily use.

Move at rest stops

Five minutes of movement every 2–3 hours beats any cushion. Walk the lot, do a few bodyweight squats, stretch hip flexors (they shorten from sitting) and the thoracic spine (it rounds from the wheel). Consistency matters more than intensity.

Questions, answered

Lumbar pillow or built-in seat lumbar?

Whichever actually contacts your lower back. Factory lumbar often sits too high or too low — a separate support you can position wins.

Memory foam or gel cushion?

Gel for heat, memory foam for max pressure relief. Both beat the bare seat.

How often should I get out and move?

Every 2–3 hours minimum. Five minutes of walking and stretching resets more than you'd think.
