Truck sleeper bunk

Guide

Team driving sleep setup

Your partner drives, you sleep — in a moving truck. Here's how to make it work.

Updated October 5, 2026

Sleeping in a moving truck is an acquired skill, and the learning curve is brutal without the right setup. The goal: make the bunk so dark, so steady, and so comfortable that your brain stops noticing the highway.

Blackout is non-negotiable

Daylight sleep fails without true blackout. Cover every window in the sleeper — windshield curtain, side window covers, and seal the light leaks around the edges. Your eyes can detect astonishingly little light when you're trying to sleep.

Sound

White noise (fan, app, or dedicated machine) masks the variable sounds — gear changes, rumble strips, the Jake brake — that jerk you awake. Constant drone is fine; it's the changes that wake you. Earplugs plus white noise is the belt-and-suspenders approach.

The bunk

A good mattress matters double when the truck is moving — every bump transmits through a thin pad. See the sleeper mattress guide for picks.

You don't get used to bad sleep. You just get worse at everything else.

CPAP on the road

Running a CPAP in a moving truck is entirely doable — it needs clean 12V power (a power station or inverter, sized with headroom) and a stable spot where it won't walk off the shelf. Talk to your sleep doctor about a travel unit; they're smaller, lighter, and more forgiving of voltage quirks.

Sleeping while parked vs moving

Some drivers genuinely can't sleep in a moving truck at first. Give it two weeks of proper blackout and white noise before declaring it impossible — most adapt. If you truly can't, that's a solo-driving conversation, not a gear problem.

Questions, answered

How do I black out a sleeper?

Cover every window including the windshield curtain. Seal edge leaks — even pinholes matter for daylight sleep.

Can I run a CPAP in the truck?

Yes — stable 12V power via power station or inverter, and a travel CPAP unit helps.

How long until I adapt to moving sleep?

Most drivers adapt within 1–2 weeks with proper blackout and white noise.
