Winter idling: costs, laws & alternatives
Idling is the most expensive way to stay warm. Here's the math and the alternatives.
Updated October 5, 2026
Idling feels free because nobody hands you a bill at 3am. But the fuel gauge, the engine wear, and the growing list of anti-idling fines are all billing you quietly.
What idling costs
3–4 litres per hour × 10 hours × your diesel price = the nightly cost of staying warm the lazy way. Over a 5-month winter of regular nights, that's thousands of litres. Run your numbers in the winter idling payback calculator and the idle fuel cost calculator.
Where it's restricted
Anti-idling rules vary by province, state, and municipality — time limits, temperature exemptions, and fines differ everywhere you park. The trend is one direction: more restrictions, not fewer. Check the rules where you run, especially in urban areas and California.
The alternatives
Diesel bunk heater — the real solution. See the full guide.
Heated blanket + good bag — heats you, not the air. See heated blankets.
Shore power — where available, an electric heater on a proper hookup is cheap and clean.
The cheapest idle is the one you didn't need.
What NOT to do
Don't run a 1500W space heater off your inverter — see why not. Don't idle with the exhaust near your air intake. And don't assume "everyone does it" is a legal defense. Don't idle all night just to keep the fuel warm either — dose diesel anti-gel before the cold and keep a rescue bottle in the side box.
Questions, answered
How much does idling cost per night?
Roughly 30–40L of diesel for a 10-hour night — use the idle fuel cost calculator for your price.
Is idling illegal?
Restricted in many places, with varying time limits and fines. Check local rules.
What's the best alternative?
A diesel bunk heater — fraction of the fuel, legal everywhere, pays for itself in one winter.
