Trucking regulations

Trucking in Canada is split: Ottawa sets the federal rules, and each province runs licensing and enforcement. Start with these official sources — not forum lore.

• Transport Canada — road transportation — the federal rules behind trucking: motor carrier safety, electronic logging devices, and cross-border requirements.
• Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) — the coordinating body for every province and territory; home of the National Safety Code and the hours-of-service standard.
• Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations — the actual law on driving limits, off-duty time, and daily logs (SOR/2005-313), free and searchable on the Justice Laws site.
• Official MTO truck handbook — Ontario’s official guide for Class A and D drivers: licensing steps, daily inspections, and load rules.

Weather and road conditions

Check before you roll — especially October through April.

• Environment Canada — weather.gc.ca — official forecasts, warnings, and radar. The baseline to check before trusting any app.
• The Weather Network — Canadian forecasts with highway-condition reporting.
• Alberta 511 — live Alberta road conditions, closures, and highway cameras.
• DriveBC — BC’s official highway conditions, webcams, and events.
• Ontario 511 — Ontario road conditions and cameras, including truck-relevant restrictions.
• Saskatchewan Highway Hotline — Saskatchewan’s official winter and construction road reports.
• Manitoba 511 — Manitoba highway conditions and closures.
• Québec 511 — Quebec road conditions, available in English.

Class 1 licensing: study and schools

Every province runs its own licensing, and training rules changed recently in Alberta — in April 2025 the province replaced MELT with the Class 1 Learning Pathway, so confirm the current training rules on alberta.ca before booking anything.

Safety organizations and associations

The groups that set standards, push policy, and publish free safety material.

• Canadian Trucking Alliance — the national voice of the trucking industry: policy, safety news, and industry research.
• Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) — sets the North American roadside-inspection standards; know what inspectors check before they check you.
• Canada Safety Council — independent safety education, including driver-focused programs.
• Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety — free workplace health and safety resources, including driver fatigue material.
• Transport Canada: rail transportation — rail safety information for drivers, including level-crossing rules.
• Alberta Motor Transport Association — Alberta’s trucking association: training, safety programs, and industry news.
• BC Trucking Association — BC’s trucking association: safety resources and regulatory updates.
• Saskatchewan Trucking Association — Saskatchewan’s trucking association, including MELT and licensing guidance.

Diesel is the biggest line item on any long haul. Watch the trends, not just the pump.
