12V cooler battery-drain calculator: will it last the night?

Research-based. We did not test these hands-on. Scores come from published specs and driver reviews.

The question every driver asks before a January shutdown: if I leave the cooler plugged in, will the truck start in the morning? Plug in your setup below and get a straight answer. The math is deliberately conservative — it assumes you never drain starting batteries past half, and it discounts capacity for cold.

For the full breakdown of why cooler type matters more than battery size, read the overnight battery-drain guide.

Enter your setup, pick the weather, and get a straight answer before you shut down for the night.

From the nameplate or spec sheet: roughly 36–50 W for a compressor fridge, 45–60 W for a thermoelectric cooler.

Mild weather: the battery delivers close to its rated capacity.

If the math says it won’t make it

Three levers move the number, in order of impact:

1. Cooler type. A thermoelectric cooler has no thermostat and runs its Peltier module at full power all night — 45 to 60 watts, every minute. A compressor fridge cycles off once it is cold, averaging 30–40% of its rated draw. On the same bank and the same night, the compressor fridge runs two to three times longer.

2. Battery type. Flooded lead-acid should not be drained past 50% if you want it to start the truck tomorrow. AGM tolerates 80% depth of discharge. Same 400 Ah bank: 200 usable amp-hours flooded, 320 AGM.

3. Cold. At −20°C expect roughly 30% less usable capacity; at −40°C expect roughly half. This is physics, not a battery problem — a brand-new bank derates the same way.

The honest cheapest fix on a northern route is a compressor cooler: it sips power instead of guzzling it, which is the whole game on a 10-hour shutdown.
