Jump starters for diesel trucks

A diesel needs serious cranking amps. Your jump gear should too.

Updated October 5, 2026

Nothing empties a truck stop parking lot of good Samaritans faster than "can I get a jump?" at 4am in January. Carry your own solution.

Jump packs

Look for diesel-rated peak amps, and keep the pack itself charged — a dead jump pack is a paperweight. Store it where it won't freeze solid; lithium packs lose punch in deep cold.

Cables (the backup)

Heavy-gauge, long enough to reach between trucks parked nose-to-tail, with clamps that actually bite. Cheap thin cables won't carry diesel cranking current.

The best jump is the one you give yourself.

Be seen while you're vulnerable

Jumping a truck on a shoulder at night is dangerous. LED flares set out early give traffic time to move over.

Questions, answered

Will a car jump pack start a diesel?

Usually not — diesels need far more cranking amps. Buy diesel-rated.

How do I keep the pack ready?

Charge it monthly, store it above freezing when possible.

Cables or pack?

Both. The pack is convenient; cables never run out of charge.
