Ontario Sets Tougher Training Rules For New Truck Drivers

Ontario is rolling out a standardized training curriculum for commercial truck drivers, adding waiting periods, extra road tests and mandatory instruction hours that will directly shape the path for newcomers building a career behind the wheel.

The changes begin phasing in on January 1, 2027, with full curriculum implementation expected early next year.

The Ontario government says the update marks a milestone in its plan to keep the province’s roads among the safest in North America.

Officials are developing a new entry level curriculum so every commercial driver, no matter where they trained, receives the same consistent, high quality instruction before getting behind the wheel of a heavy vehicle.
